NOF

The
National
Osteoporosis
Foundation
Library
For
nearly a
decade
The
National
Osteoporosis
Foundation
(NOF)
has been
working
to build
an
impressive
library
with
valuable
resources
on bone
health,
osteoporosis
and
related
bone
diseases.
The
library
serves
primarily
as a
resource
for NOF
staff
who may
be
researching
information
for new
fact
sheets,
educational
materials,
or
inquiries
on
osteoporosis.
The
library
resources
are also
open to
the
public
and
especially
helpful
for
health
professionals,
physicians,
researchers
and
medical
students.

Toni
Stabile,
with her
brother
Vincent
A.
Stabile,
generously
provided
NOF with
the
funds to
purchase
its
national
headquarters
in
Washington,
D.C.,
which
houses
the
library
dedicated
to
osteoporosis
and bone
health.
Shortly
after
this
endowment,
NOF
dedicated
the
library
as the
“Toni
Stabile
Library
and
Conference
Center”
in Ms.
Stabile’s
honor.
The
library
has
proven
to be a
resource
that
truly
helps
NOF
advance
our
mission
of
preventing
osteoporosis
and
related
fractures,
promoting
lifelong
bone
health,
helping
improve
the
lives of
cure. |

Ms.
Stabile’s
personal
experience
with
osteoporosis
led to
her
interest
in
educating
the
public
about
osteoporosis
and bone
health.
When her
doctor
misdiagnosed
her
osteoporosis,
she
suffered
a
painful
fracture
and had
to
manage
the
chronic
pain
that
followed.
Determined
to learn
as much
as she
could
about
osteoporosis
she
scoured
the
limited
information
available
at
libraries.
As a
result
of her
research,
Ms.
Stabile
published
internationally
acclaimed
work on
osteoporosis,
focusing
largely
on
osteoporosis
and the
young.
She
wanted
this
library
to help
NOF to
continue
spreading
the
message
that
osteoporosis
is
preventable.
The
library
is
divided
into two
sections,
one for
medical
journals
and
periodicals
and the
other
for
books.
NOF
subscribes
to and
receives
a number
of
medical
journals
including,
Annals
of
Internal
Medicine,
Bone,
and The
American
Journal
of
Public
Health.
NOF
publications,
such as
the
Osteoporosis
International,
are
available
as well.
Many of
the
books
and some
of the
journals
in the
library
specifically
deal
with
osteoporosis
and bone
health,
though
there
are
numerous
books
that
also
deal
with
arthritis,
Paget’s
disease,
and
other
metabolic
bone
diseases,
as well
as
general
medicine
and
science.
Some of
the
journals
that
deal
with a
large
variety
of
medical
conditions
include:
The
Lancet,
Journal
of
American
Medical
Association
(JAMA)
and the
New
England
Journal
of
Medicine.
The
shelves
of books
cover a
range of
topics;
from
lifestyle
and
nutrition
to
prescription
drugs
and
exercise.
While
NOF
receives
some
publications
as a
benefit
of
membership,
the
majority
are
purchased
in order
to keep
the
library
current
and
fully
stocked.
As such,
NOF
appreciates
monetary
and
in-kind
donations
to help
obtain
valuable
additions
and
build
the
library’s
resources.
