Speakers at the
Colorado meeting included
Jillian Jacobellis, PhD, MS,
Director of the Prevention
Services Division at the
Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment and other
health professionals.
Presenters emphasized the need
for increased awareness and
prevention of osteoporosis. As
at the previous training,
Roberta Biegel, Senior Director
of Public Policy and Government
Relations at NOF, opened the
forum by welcoming participants
and discussing NOF’s current
policy priorities, programs and
resources.
Dr.
Paul Miller, MD, Clinical
Professor of Medicine at the
University of Colorado Medical
Center and Medical Director of
the Colorado Center for Bone
Research, spoke about the
prevalence of osteoporosis,
fracture risk and prevention. He
also directed attention to the
under-diagnosis and
under-treatment of osteoporosis
across the nation.
To highlight
current osteoporosis issues in
Colorado, a panel of local
experts discussed barriers to
osteoporosis healthcare and
prevention and policies that
seek to address these
challenges.
Bonnie Sherman,
MS, of the
Colorado State University
Cooperative Extension, described
the “Strong Women, Strong Bones”
program in the state and how it
helps seniors to develop and
maintain their bone health.

Department of Public Health and
Environment, Prevention Services
Division/Chronic Disease
Section, discussed the need for
the expansion of programs, like
“Strong Women, Strong Bones,”
that could directly benefit
people with or at risk for
osteoporosis in Colorado. |
