Advocacy Training Meetings

26 Apr 2006

Denver, Colorado

Speakers at the Colorado meeting included Jillian Jacobellis, PhD, MS, Director of the Prevention Services Division at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and other health professionals.  Presenters emphasized the need for increased awareness and prevention of osteoporosis. As at the previous training, Roberta Biegel, Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations at NOF, opened the forum by welcoming participants and discussing NOF’s current policy priorities, programs and resources.

Dr. Paul Miller, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Medical Center and Medical Director of the Colorado Center for Bone Research, spoke about the prevalence of osteoporosis, fracture risk and prevention. He also directed attention to the under-diagnosis and under-treatment of osteoporosis across the nation.

To highlight current osteoporosis issues in Colorado, a panel of local experts discussed barriers to osteoporosis healthcare and prevention and policies that seek to address these challenges.

Bonnie Sherman, MS, of the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, described the “Strong Women, Strong Bones” program in the state and how it helps seniors to develop and maintain their bone health.

Penny K. Studebaker, Program Manager, Older Adult Wellness, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Prevention Services Division/Chronic Disease Section, discussed the need for the expansion of programs, like “Strong Women, Strong Bones,” that could directly benefit people with or at risk for osteoporosis in Colorado.
