OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this CE material, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify the causes and skeletal consequences of chronic kidney disease.
  2. Discuss the significance of occult CKD in elderly patients.
  3. Recognize the difficulties associated with applying WHO osteoporosis diagnostic criteria to CKD patients.
  4. Determine the best method currently available to conclusively diagnose osteoporosis in a patient with chronic kidney disease.
  5. Cite the management considerations involved in treatment of a CKD patient diagnosed with osteoporosis.
