Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44
million Americans, or 55 percent of the people 50 years of age
and older. In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals are
estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more
are estimated to have low bone mass, placing them at increased
risk for osteoporosis.
Today, a variety of effective diagnostic and
therapeutic agents exist to help diagnose and prevent disease in
patients at risk and improve outcomes in patients with
established disease. In addition, evidence-based guidelines are
now available to assist clinicians in developing and
implementing effective programs of osteoporosis prevention,
diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
In spite of the availability of effective
prevention, diagnostic, and treatment for osteoporosis, research
indicates that osteoporosis is significantly underdiagnosed and
undertreated in the general population.
The goal of the NOF Osteoporosis: Clinical
Updates is to improve patient care related to osteoporosis
prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by providing clinicians
with state-of-the-art information and pragmatic strategies on
the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis that
they may apply in clinical practice.
