Promoting Your Event

Event Promotion

To help spread the word about your event, you will need to contact your area media outlets.  Most newspapers have a calendar that lists the date, time, place and cost of any local event.  Check with your local paper to find out how far in advance information is needed.  A media alert is an easy way to disseminate the pertinent information.

You also can generate stories by preparing a press release about your event.  In addition to identifying when and where your event will occur, a press release can present a more personal and compelling story that creates awareness about osteoporosis and NOF.  Take a look at a sample press release, sample PSA, sample media alert to give you an idea of what to include.

Another simple – and effective – way to attract participants is with the old fashioned, tried and true method of posting fliers and posters!  Put them in your grocery store, the library, doctor’s office, dry cleaner and any other place that has a spot.

Be sure to include a copy of NOF’s Fast Facts on Osteoporosis in your press materials.

Get Celebrities Involved

Local celebrities, including politicians, DJs and television news anchors/personalities (such as weathermen) always draw a crowd.  Enlist their help to promote your event.  Having a newspaper, TV or radio station as an event sponsor will provide great exposure for your event while helping the station meets its community outreach objectives.  In addition to having the station run your public service announcements, invite the local weatherman to the your honorary chair for your outdoor (or indoor) event and he/she will be sure to mention it on the forecast as something great to do on a beautiful (or cold and rainy) day.
