Detecting Osteoporosis

Making a Diagnosis

A medical evaluation to diagnose osteoporosis and estimate your risk of breaking a bone may involve one or more steps.

Low Bone Density (Osteopenia)

Low bone density (osteopenia) is when your bone density is lower than normal, but not low enough to be considered osteoporosis. It may mean that you have a greater chance of getting osteoporosis if you lose bone in the future because you have less bone to lose. People with low bone density are more likely to break a bone compared to people with normal bone density.

What Women Need to Know

Being female puts you at risk of developing osteoporosis and broken bones. There are multiple reasons why women are more like to get osteoporosis than men.

Just for Men

Although women are at greater risk, men get osteoporosis too. If you think you can’t get osteoporosis because you’re a man, think again. As our population ages, even more men will get the disease.

Having a Bone Density Test

You can find out whether you have osteoporosis or if you should be concerned about your bones by getting a bone density test. Some people also call it a bone mass measurement test. This test uses a machine to measure your bone density. It estimates the amount of bone in your hip, spine and sometimes other bones. Your test result will help your healthcare provider make recommendations to help you protect your bones.
