Academy Award-Winning Actress Cloris Leachman Among Honorees at the National Osteoporosis Foundation Silhouette Awards Dinner
The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) honored Academy Award-winning actress and former Dancing With The Stars contestant, Cloris Leachman, for living strong with osteoporosis, at its Silhouette Awards Dinner on May 19 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC. Other honorees in attendance included Dr. Lawrence G. Raisz of the University of Connecticut Center for Osteoporosis and Rolanette and Berdon Lawrence with their namesake Bone Disease Program of Texas. Senator Blanche L. Lincoln of Arkansas, a congressional champion for NOF and bone health, was unable to attend, but provided a video message to dinner guests.
Nearly 300 guests were in attendance, including leaders from the worlds of medicine, research, business and entertainment, as well as current and former members of Congress. Maureen Bunyan of ABC 7/WJLA-TV served as mistress of ceremonies for the evening celebrating Healthy Bones, Build Them For Life®, the focus of NOF's 2010 National Osteoporosis Awareness & Prevention Month campaign.
The audience was inspired by the remarks from Dr. Lawrence G. Raisz, a world renowned bone health leader; Berdon Lawrence, a male patient and advocate from Houston; and Senator Lincoln, whose support of osteoporosis awareness and prevention has helped to advance NOF's mission on the national healthcare agenda. Guests were also entertained by NOF Board Member and author Carol Saline's interview of Cloris Leachman. Recounting many theatrical and personal experiences from her life, Cloris conveyed how osteoporosis never slowed her down, and she even sang her famous "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy" from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.
"NOF is proud to recognize the accomplishments of our distinguished honorees this evening," said Robert Recker, M.D., president of NOF. "Osteoporosis and broken bones affect one in two women and up to one in four men in the U.S. today, and Cloris, Dr. Raisz, Berdon and Rolanette Lawrence and Senator Lincoln are so diverse and effective in their roles in bone health awareness."
The Silhouette Awards Dinner, held each May during National Osteoporosis Awareness & Prevention Month, reflects our hope that one day, every silhouette will stand tall and osteoporosis will no longer impact the health and well-being of the 10 million Americans with the disease and the 34 million more at risk.

In this newly-established role, Grufferman, a well-known advocate for healthy and positive living, will dedicate her time, talent and energy to raise awareness for osteoporosis and the importance of building strong bones for life.
