National Osteoporosis Foundation and International Society for Clinical Densitometry Team Up for 2010 Annual Meeting
(Washington, DC) — The International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) and National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) have combined efforts to assist the clinician and technologist in providing the most relevant, up-to-date information for clinical practice atCLINICAL OSTEOPOROSIS 2010: An ISCD-NOF Symposium.
As the foremost bone health organizations in professional education and consumer information, both bring their extensive expertise together for an in-depth meeting that convenes top researchers, clinicians and technologists in an important conference about cutting-edge advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
"We're looking forward to working with NOF in executing this comprehensive symposium for the benefit of our respective members," said Peter Brown, executive director, ISCD. This premier event exposes attendees to the latest, evidence-based information on osteoporosis and bone health in one must-attend professional development opportunity.

CLINICAL OSTEOPOROSIS 2010 will offer in-depth and interactive educational sessions addressing epidemiology, pathophysiology, genetics; primary and secondary osteoporosis; diagnosis and risk assessment; clinical considerations, therapeutics; sociobehavioral medicine, nutrition, education; technology; and emerging science.

Last week, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Panel voted that the risks of calcitonin salmon outweigh the benefits for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The panel joined health authorities around the world in reviewing the drug’s safety after two recent studies showed slightly higher rates of cancer among patients taking calcitonin. The panel voted against continued use of the drug by a narrow majority, pointing out that it has not been found very effective in preventing bone fractures.
In today's Washington Post article "Calcium and Vitamin D findings show that caring for your bones can be compilicated," NOF's senior clinical director, Dr. Felicia Cosman helps clear up some of the confusion around the recent and conflicting research on calcium and vitamin D. She says: "It’s confusing, even for doctors. But there’s a common thread: None of the heart or kidney risks were associated with calcium from food."
