Fab Over Fifty teams up with Cleveland Clinic and the National Osteoporosis Foundation to Fight Osteoporosis

The Bone Health Challenge kicks-off on World Osteoporosis Day, October 20th, connecting women everywhere to the leading bone health resources in the nation

September 27, 2010 (New York/New York)—A woman’s chance of breaking a bone from osteoporosis is higher than her combined risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.  FabOverFifty (www.faboverfifty.com) the nation’s leading style and networking site for boomer women, Cleveland Clinic and the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) are calling women everywhere to recognize, prevent and treat this debilitating disease. Together they have launched the Bone Health Challenge giving women all the tools they need to understand this disease and interact with medical experts.

The National Bone Health Challenge connects women across the country with renowned osteoporosis experts on FabOverFifty.com, and provides access to the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s patient-centered resources.  Women will be able to submit their bone health questions and watch video interviews with osteoporosis experts explaining the latest on prevention and treatment. They’ll also find links to NOF educational content and meet real women who are fighting osteoporosis.

Each woman who visits the site is challenged to take three simple steps to save her bones:

  1. Visit her doctor to assess her risk factors.
  2. Work with her doctor to develop a plan of action to either prevent or treat bone loss.
  3. Comment on Faboverfifty.com with what she’s doing to keep her bones strong.

Women who participate in the National Bone Health Challenge will be entered to win an incredible prize package worth over $3,000 courtesy of FabOverFifty.com.

“One-in-every two women over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related broken bone in her lifetime,” said Geri Brin, Founder of FabOverFifty.com. “I hope to make FabOverFifty.com the place where women can connect with the very best bone health doctors. I want to give the fab over fifty generation the ammunition it needs to save their own bones and to protect their daughters’ bones.”

“It is of most importance for women to pay attention to their bone health,” said Dr. Holly Thacker, Director of The Center for Specialized Women’s Health at Cleveland Clinic. “We are excited to take part in this public health initiative and encourage women all over the country to take the necessary steps towards preventing this disease.”

“Osteoporosis now causes an estimated two million fractures each year and can result in immobility, pain, and other health problems,” furthered Amy Porter, National Osteoporosis Foundation Executive Director and CEO. “These conditions and circumstances could largely be prevented through proper prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”

The challenge begins on October 20th and continues through Summer 2011.

The latest

Last week, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Panel voted that the risks of calcitonin salmon outweigh the benefits for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The panel joined health authorities around the world in reviewing the drug’s safety after two recent studies showed slightly higher rates of cancer among patients taking calcitonin. The panel voted against continued use of the drug by a narrow majority, pointing out that it has not been found very effective in preventing bone fractures.

In today's Washington Post article "Calcium and Vitamin D findings show that caring for your bones can be compilicated," NOF's senior clinical director, Dr. Felicia Cosman helps clear up some of the confusion around the recent and conflicting research on calcium and vitamin D. She says: "It’s confusing, even for doctors. But there’s a common thread: None of the heart or kidney risks were associated with calcium from food."

CIRCA, the leading international buyer of fine jewelry, diamonds and watches, announced a new partnership with NOF at a Generations of Strength luncheon at the Friars Club in New York City on February 26. To kick-off the partnership, CIRCA’s Acting CEO Mary L. Forté presented NOF Executive Director and CEO Amy Porter with a check for $25,000, to support NOF’s mission.
