Osteoporosis:  Improving Clinical Practice
Meeting Overview

In the Fall of 2008 the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) offered a series of regional meetings entitled Osteoporosis: Improving Clinical Practice. This meeting series was designed for healthcare professionals working in the primary care setting giving them the most up-to-date and practical clinical applications they need to treat the bone health needs of their diverse patient populations.

The meetings were held in Anaheim, CA, Chicago, IL, and Houston, TX; a variety of healthcare professionals  attended the three events. The program agenda was the same for each location but was given by different presenters each from the geographic location of the meeting.

The keynote address was given by an NOF representative and provided an excellent background on the foundation and an overview of the services it provides both healthcare professionals and consumers.

The first session covered the Evaluation of the At-Risk Patient for Osteoporosis with two talks, one on Clinical Assessment and a second one on Fracture Risk Assessment.  The first talk was given by Robin Dore, MD (Anaheim), Susan Broy, MD (Chicago), and Alan Burshell, MD (Houston). This talk covered how to identify the at-risk patient and the role of screening in identifying the at-risk patient as well as the common occurrence of vitamin D deficiency.

The second talk given by Stuart Silverman, MD (Anaheim), Murray Favus, MD (Chicago), and Steven Petak, MD (Houston) provided a brief history of the Assessment Guidelines, a discussion of the new FRAX™ model and the newly released NOF Clinician’s Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis.

The second session entitled Factors Influencing Osteoporosis Care covered Lifestyle Choices and Clinical Challenges.  Lifestyle Choices presented by Diane Schneider, MD (Anaheim), Sharon Feldman, PT (Chicago), and Susan Rawlins, NP (Houston) covered negative health habits, the benefits of physical activity, importance of proper nutrition and behavior modification strategies.

The second talk presented by Mike Lewiecki, MD (Anaheim), Beatrice Edwards, MD (Chicago), Mimi I-Nan Hu, MD (Houston) gave practical suggestions on how to identify, evaluate and treat the non-responding patient.

A Panel Discussion on the NOF Clinician’s Guide and Your Practice gave the audience the opportunity to ask the experts about how to incorporate the recommendations of the guide into their daily practice.

The third session on Treatment Strategies in Osteoporosis Care, covered Osteoporosis Therapies and Secondary Disorders of Osteoporosis.

The first talk presented by Mike Maricic, MD (Anaheim), Michael Kleerekoper, MD (Chicago), and  Jan Bruder, MD (Houston) provided a history of osteoporosis medications development as well as a look at the latest therapeutic agents in production.

The second talk presented by Elliott Schwartz, MD (Anaheim), Angelo Licata, MD (Chicago), Rob Weinstein, MD (Houston) discussed pharmacologic, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and cancer-related causes of osteoporosis.

A final Clinical Case presentations session allowed the audience to put to practical use all that was discussed during the meeting
